Cell-to-Cell Communication reveals processes that are invisible to the naked eye: cells respond to implants, trigger inflammation, break down bone, or help new tissue form. The biomedical animation series combines scientific findings with sophisticated 3D imagery.

What began with a module on osseointegration grew into a seven-part series created over more than a decade. Each topic had separate versions for experts and the interested public. Throughout this development, Triacom provided translation, editing, and terminological coordination in German and English.

Translating before the animation is finished

With a completed book, the source text and illustrations are normally fixed. In Cell-to-Cell Communication, the texts moved as well: during development, content was translated back and forth between German and English, refined, and adapted to new versions of the animations.

Nor was the source language always the same. Translation became part of the development process and, at the same time, a means of communication among the specialists involved.

Technical accuracy is not enough. Narration must do more than get the facts right. It must be easy to speak, fit the timing of the visuals, and explain precisely what the viewer is seeing at that moment. The public version also had to tell the same story differently than the version for scientists and clinicians.

From film to Cell Atlas

Published in 2022, Cell Atlas—Visual Biology in Oral Medicine is the seventh part of the series. This richly illustrated book brings together many of the previously animated biological processes in a new format. Triacom translated the German edition.

It is accompanied by the augmented reality app AR Osteoclasts, which presents bone resorption by osteoclasts as a three-dimensional process. The film series had evolved into an interplay of animation, book, and interactive application.
