What happens to your text once it is in?
Preliminaries If the source copy is formally unsuitable for professional processing (paper, fax, PDF files, ...), it will be digitized and prepped.
The translator reads and analyzes the test to get familiar with it, getting an overview over the task (target language and readers, technical terms and custom terminology, formatting requirements ...), and collects and views existing materials. Depending on the task, the translator will research glossaries, terminology databases, and online services and make notes for discussion with the client if required.
Translation Good translators view texts as a whole, just like readers will. New insights and ideas often materialize at a fairly late stage of the process, and they need to be applied to text already translated. Translation is a recursive form of text development. We try to let the translator have the entire text under control at any time within the process — staggered delivery should be restricted to situations where it is unavoidable.
With original copy, first drafts are normally subjected to changes, corrections, or amendments. You learn as you write, and what you learn benefits your copy. Translation works the same way!
Translations should be allowed to mature. Texts will benefit from being appraised at a distance and amended where required.
Finishing The translation is read and checked for errors and omissions, consistency, and compliance with specifications, if possible by a second translator or editor (double-verification principle). The translation is then returned to the translator, who evaluates the editor’s comments, consults with the editor or client if necessary, and makes any modifications deemed necessary.
Delivery The translation is again checked for formal compliance, receives a final polish, and is delivered. On time!
